· Buffer zone (minimum of 2 yards) required by federation rules to keep spectators off the field.
· Sue Thurston will email the new rules.

· Rain date for state championships is Tuesday, November 11

· Will try not to duplicate on line courses
First Team
· Proposal to change Freshman teams to First teams (to include sophomores as is already informally done)
· Ken Levinsky will provide SMAA First team guidelines
· Item for September agenda
· York gives OK to send sophomores to Freshman games.
Rising Energy Costs
· Greely and Yarmouth successfully sharing buses
· Some schools allow parents to pick up their children
· Freshman soccer schedules coordinated between SMAA and WMC
· Freshman basketball scheduling premise. Melanie Craig will solicit ideas via email.
VI Individual Sport Reports
FALL SPORTS -
Cross Country
· Coaches meeting August 25 in Waynflete Arts Center (same place as last year).
· Chandler relays August 27. Information was emailed. Dave Dowling (210-0528) is contact.
· Lake Region invitational on August 30. $25 charge.
· Conference meet at Falmouth Community Park on Friday, October 10. Rain date is the following Friday.
· State meet returning to Belfast (same site as two years ago at Troy Howard Middle School). Belfast's course is flat and fast, unlike Leavitt.
· Belfast invitational on October 3. York boys and girls varsity going there instead of to Gray. Gray will go to Lake Region. NYA will go to Belfast too. Other teams may also want to go to Belfast. Ross will discuss this with the coaches on August 25. Possibly move Friday conference meets to another day to accommodate JVs etc.
· Non-conference schools (Friends, A.R. Gould) contacted Ross about participating. He told them to contact the host school to see if they can be accommodated. No charge at this point except in track.
· Freeport building new course. If not ready will return to Pineland.
Field Hockey
· Jack Trull distributed 2008 bylaws. Contrary to bylaw "Games #3", Cape JVs play prior to varsity. That bylaw will be changed to "recommended" "Unless mutually agreed upon" and resent by Jack.
· Poland may not have a JV team.
· Waynflete does not have a JV team.
· Possible to pick up Frosh or JV games with SMAA.
· Ken Roberts was originally going to work with Sue Weatherbie to get organized, but that didn't materialize. He has dates on the Arbiter. Names of opponents will be on Arbiter after playdays.
· Shortage of officials again.
· League members are concerned that senior officials are not consistently giving hand signals. Sue Thurston will see if there were any rule changes. If so, ADs were not informed.
Football
· Reminder to send schedules to Paul DuPerre.
· Peter Brown emailed Campbell Conference schools on August 16 about
a dues charge of $100. Schools asked to send him stats following each game
by the next Monday. Peter will be asked to send schools a template for the
stats.
· Campbell conference meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 4 in
Lisbon. That is the same day as the MPA AD meeting.
· Freeport accepted to play in the Campbell Conference beginning fall
2009. They had only 14 participants in varsity practice on August 20.
Numbers are much better at 8th grade and youth levels.
Golf
JV dates.
Soccer
· Traip has low numbers of frosh and sophomores, but intend to
fulfill JV schedule.
· Buckfield looking for JV and varsity games.
· Mike Jack now at Winthrop.
· Guidelines were e-mailed.
Volleyball
· Round robin at Greely moved to middle school.
· Assigner is Marc Cone. His email is Marccone@msn.com
· Falmouth has large numbers and would like some JV matches.
· State Championship is in Ellsworth.
WINTER SPORTS -
Basketball
· Second year of two-year schedule in 2008-09 previously distributed.
Will go date by date in September.
· Inform Melanie about plans for Frosh and JVs so that schedule can
be reviewed in October.
· Suggest contacting Richmond and Buckfield to confirm scheduled
games.
· Officials board wants to meet with Craig, Steve Merrill and Larry
LaRochelle. Craig concerned that as all assignments are made in November,
there is no flexibility for changes during the last week of season. (Ken
Roberts has the flexibility to make late season officials assignment changes
in soccer and lacrosse.) Board suggested using a third official if a game
has become important, but ADs feel that can be counterproductive.
Cheering
Conference championship January 10, 2009 at Wells.
Ice Hockey
Principals approved a plan to begin the girls' season on November 3, two
weeks before the boys start.
Girls' season will also end two weeks earlier than the boys to allow for
less facility conflicts, especially during playoffs.
Alpine Skiing
· Paul distributed schedule
· New bibs to be purchased
Nordic Skiing
No report
Indoor Track
· Season begins January 2 and runs for 5 weeks. Some schools still on
vacation January 2, so probably reduced numbers that week.

· League championship February 7
· State championship February 16.
